Research Description:

Professor Emeritus Barry Carpenter was born in Hastings, England in 1949. He received his B.Sc. in molecular science with 1st class honors from Warwick University in 1970 and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from University College London in 1973. After postdoctoral work with J.A. Berson (1973-75) at Yale University, he came to Cornell University as an Assistant Professor. In 1981 he was promoted to Associate Professor and to Full Professor in 1985. From 2001-2004 Professor Carpenter served as Chair of the Department, and in 2004 was named the Horace White Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Professor Carpenter retired and became the Horace White Professor of Chemistry Emeritus in 2007.

During his time at Cornell, Professor Carpenter consulted with several companies, served on editorial boards, and served as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Organic Chemistry from 1992-2000. He was the recipient of several awards including Alfred P. Sloan and John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, the ACS Cope Scholar Award, and the ACS James Flack Norris Award, and was named a fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science.

Currently Professor Carpenter serves as Professor and Director of the Centre for Physical Organic Chemistry at Cardiff University.
